The Essentialness of Unity

“How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!” – Psalm 133:1

We live in a world of disharmony and disunity!
Congress can’t function. Divorce is growing. Child Abuse is more frequent. Violence is now a constant.
Our court system is overloaded with litigation.
Predictions are that by 2025, 25% of all Americans will be under some kind of psychiatric care.
We can’t get along with each other.

This disgruntled mindset eventually finds it’s way into the local church.
It rears its head with a “me first” attitude, an every man for himself approach to life!
It is Individualism...and it destroys the ability of a local congregation to function and minister to the community!

Consider this. Five times in John 17, Jesus prays for unity in his followers.
“That they may be one” – (v.11)
“That they all may be one” – (v.21)
“That they all be one in us” – (v. 21)
That they may be one just as we are one” – (v.22)
“May they be brought to complete unity” – (v.23)

Why did Jesus call for our unity?
“To let the world know that you [God] have sent me” – (v.23)

The world doesn’t read the Bible...but they do read you.
The world doesn’t listen to sermons, but they will listen to you.
The unity of the body of Christ is so important in our witness to a lost world.
Unity attracts. Disunity repulses!

And no amount of talent, experience, programs or flash and jazz in the worship assembly will get you past this truth.
Disunity is rooted in individualism and it will eventually destroy a church!

There are many analogies utilized in the scriptures to illustrate the relationship between Jesus and His people.
He is the Groom, and we are the Bride.
He is the Captain, and we are the soldiers.
He is the Lord, and we are His servants.
But there is none more compelling and descriptive than...He is the Head, and we are the body!

As the Head of the church, Jesus rules! His presence is found in His body on earth – the church.

When Jesus was in His earthly body here on earth, the scriptures tell of the tremendous magnetism and charisma that He possessed and how it drew people to Him. Women adored Him. Children crawled all over Him. Men were so devoted to Him that they eventually died for Him. Everyone wanted to be close to Jesus.

That is why we must absolutely protect the unity of the body of Christ, and that can’t be done when individualism exists anywhere within the walls of the church.

The Spirit of Christ is best lived out in view in the words of Paul.
“Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.” – Romans 12:10 (NLT)
“Outdo one another with brotherly love.” (CSB)
Wow! What wonderful wording...’delight in’ and ‘outdo’ one another.
Putting others before yourself!
That’s what makes a marriage work and that’s what it takes to make a church work as well!

There are always going to be disagreements in the church over ministries, methods and the like.
But in seeking resolution to those disagreements, we must always honor, love and respect each other.
Why? Because Christ teaches us to die to ourselves and put others first! It’s not about us...its about Him!

“Now I urge you, bothers, in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you; and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction”. – 1 Corinthians 1:10 (CSB)

Strong churches have members who consistently place a high value on Christ’s plea for unity within the body!
It’s His church. He died for it. His name is on it. And he is counting on us to make it strong.
