Will Your Name be Called?

Will Your Name be Called?

When I was a teenager, I used to play pick-up basketball at the Men’s gymnasium on the campus of the University of North Texas.  I was a sophomore in high school, yet I wanted so badly to play with the older guys.  But because I was young, I usually never got chosen…my name was never called…I was never taken unless there was no one else.

How about you?  Do you remember what it was like to hear your name called?  To be singled out and set apart?

The Apostle Paul is writing to Timothy…for the second time.  He writes with words of encouragement to a young preacher who has been met with some less than enthusiastic members of the church.  People who are picking at him.  He wants to encourage Timothy.  But in doing so, he brings encouragement to you and me at the end of the letter.  He names names.

“Greet Priscilla and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus.  Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus.  Do your best to get here before winter.  Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers.” (2 Tim 4:19-20)  Often we do not pay close attention to the names at the end of Paul’s letters.  They are after all, his closing thoughts.  But they say a great deal to you and I.  How?   Because they are names!

They are people who played a huge role in Paul’s ministry.  They are the ones who did what others wouldn’t; who made a difference in the life of the Apostle; who made it easier for him to teach.  They were of such a stature in Paul’s daily life…that they deserved special mentioning.  There were no doubt others.  Others who were there on occasion.  Who from time to time could be counted on for an occasional day of help and support.  But these were the ones who Paul set apart from all the others.

After many, many trips across town, some of the regulars at the gym got to know me.  They learned that I had some game in me; that I could shoot and score as well as play defense.  Gradually, my name began to be called.

What about you?  Will there be those who in their final letter of life will mention your name?  Will you live your life in such a way that you are seen as the encourager?  When Paul needed to encourage Timothy, these are the ones he mentioned, the ones he set apart.

When the time comes, will your name be called?  Are there those who will set you apart?

All God’s good gifts to You!
