The Holiness of God

The Holiness of God

“He passed in front of Moses and said, ‘I am the Lord, I am the Lord, the merciful and gracious God.  I am slow to anger and rich in unfailing love and faithfulness.  I show this unfailing loce to many thousands by forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion.” – Exodus 34:6-7a

God is holy in his absolute uniqueness!

Everything else belongs in a category, but God is unique.

Male and female are human.  Rover is a dog and Sissy is a cat.  The oak is a tree; Earth is a planet; the Milky Way is but one single galaxy among millions.  Gabriel is called an angel; Satan is a demon.

But God...is God.

All else is part of creation, but God is the creator.  Everything depends on Him and has its origin in Him.

God is alone.

Moses taught Israel to sing, “Who else among the gods is like you, O Lord?  Who is glorious in holiness like you – so awesome in splendor, performing such wonders? – Exodus 15:11

Hannah, Samuel’s mother, taught Israel to sing, “No one is holy like the Lord!  There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” – 1 Samuel 2:2

Isaiah quotes God as saying, “To whom will you compare me?  Who is my equal?” – Isaiah 40:25

Revelation 4:8-11 recounts the songs that are being sung to God in heaven.

The first says, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty- the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.”

The second says, “You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power.”

The two songs are saying the same thing.  God is Holy.  Therefore, He is Worthy.

The holiness of God is the absolutely unique and infinite value of His being and His majesty.

For one to say that our God is holy means that His value is infinitely greater than the sum of the value of all created beings.

And if God is worthy...why do we reject him as we do?

Why do we try to be the ruler of our lives?

Why can’t we look around and see who God really is?

For if he is who he claims to be...the one we pronounce him to be, then our lives should be like the Israelites and we should be crying out...

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty!
